Despite the ever-increasing capacities of next-generation sequencing technologies, focusing on the exome or on specific genomic regions is essential in order to address many scientific projects in a reasonable and cost-effective way. E.g., in order to detect very rare mutations, very high coverage rates must be achieved, which is only possible by previous enrichment of the genomic loci under investigation.
